New Commons Leader Jacob Rees-Mogg jokes about his nanny during comedic debut
NEW Commons Leader Jacob Rees-Mogg joked that his Nanny would be kept out of Parliament during a comedic debut at the Despatch Box yesterday.
His opposite number Valerie Vaz suggested he could sack the 77-year-old nanny Veronica Crook now he has a team of staff in his new Cabinet job.
But in his debut following yesterday’s Cabinet promotion, Mr Rees-Mogg quipped back: “I think they might be a bit bemused if six children trotted in with me and expected to be looked after by House of Commons staff so I won’t go down that route.”
The old-fashioned Commons leader also littered his first appearance at the Despatch Box with historical references which covered nearly a millennium - dating back to the House of Plantagenet.
And he won loud cheers and laughter after ridiculing Lib Dem MP Tom Brake, who had said Mr Rees-Mogg’s appointment was a great recruiting tool for the anti-Brexit party.
Mr Rees-Mogg quipped back: “I may be a better recruiting sergeant for the Lib Dems than the right honourable gentleman is, but I fear that may not be a very difficult task.”

He also took a dig at John Bercow - in a sign of future clashes between the Remainer Speaker and the Commons Leader.
