M5 traffic delays – Northbound back open after 10 hour closure over accident caused by ‘police chase’

DRIVERS on the M5 were facing heavy delays after the motorway was closed for ten hours after reports of a police chase.

Here's the latest after the smash near Weston-super-Mare disrupted thousands.

What happened on the M5?

A stretch of the M5 northbound has reopened after a "police chase" caused major delays.

Police were trying to stop a wanted man when the two-car collision happened.

A 27-year-old driver has been arrested.

Both he and a police officer involved were injured, but neither is in a life-threatening condition.

Wells MP James Heappey, who was delayed in the M5 traffic, described the accident as  a "police chase".

The MP praised the actions of the "brave and utterly selfless" police officers at the scene.

What are the delays like on Tuesday morning?

The route between junction 21 at Weston-Super-Mare to junction 19 has been affected since 9.40pm on August 5.

Delays today (Tuesday) continued to cover several miles of the northbound carriageway.

A diversion through Bristol was put in place to ease rush hour traffic.

Public transport services also faced disruption due to the incident.

However, by 9am traffic appeared to be moving freely

What have the police said about the incident?

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Officers have arrested a driver on suspicion of dangerous driving after a collision on the M5 northbound near J21.

"It happened just before 9.40pm on Monday (August 5) as officers in marked police vehicles attempted to stop a car linked to a man wanted by another police force.

"Fire and ambulance crews attended."
