One Twitter follower responded: "Imagine what she does off camera to that dog. I don't get why do people get such dogs breed [sic] when they don't know how to handle them, train them. They need commitment and care."
Another said: "Nobody should even spit or hit their animals or anybody. What is wrong with this world."
'Helena' also agreed that Houts was just putting on an act.
She wrote: "it's scary how many creators put on a mask of 'positive' people and keep demons inside. They create an unreal reality, totally hypocritical. Thanks for speaking on this topic."
Animal welfare organisation Peta also tweeted: "Dogs deserve respect. If you can't treat dogs with kindness and instead hit them, don't get one. Attn@YouTube: Please remove Brooke Houts from your platform."
Houts has issued a lengthy apology, saying: "I am NOT a dog abuser or animal abuser in any way, shape, or form.
"Anyone who has witnessed or heard true animal abuse will be able to clearly see that.

She also claimed she didn't spit on the dog, writing: "I did NOT spit on my dog, but I understand how it could look like I did. Did I get in his face and take unnecessary actions towards him? Yes I did, and that was not the way I should've handled the situation. Did I spit on my dog? No."
She also claimed it was too expensive to hire a trainer for him.
