Residents near Falmouth were stunned when a loud boom "like a plane crash" hit homes and shook windows around 6pm on Thursday.

Other areas affected included Helston and Redruth.

One woman said the quake was so strong it knocked her beer over.

But wags on Twitter were quick to mock England's earthquake panic, with one joker sharing a picture of Homer Simpson gasping as the quake struck.

QUAKE QUIPS

Another person wrote: "I come from a small village in Cornwall ,UK and I just learned that it's having its own apocalypse, lol.

"First high winds shutting down Boardmasters Festival, then an Earthquake and now a triple storm warning. Wtf is happening!?"

Another tweeted: "Booming sound and whole house shook. Thought the water tank exploded - nope.

"Checked outside (neighbours doing same thing) in case it was a gas explosion on our street. Nope. Small earthquake in Cornwall, England? Yep. #bleddyhell #wtf."

A third posted a pic of a Cornish pasty and quipped: "Cornish earthquake disaster 08/08/19. It broke me bleedy pasty".

And another joked: "Did we just have an earthquake in Helston? Ok, a tremor then? #Cornwall. #wallsshook."

Residents in Helston, Reduth and Falmouth felt their homes shaking and a loud boom yesterday evening.

The British Geological Survey confirmed the quake struck at a depth of 1.7 miles around three miles south west of Falmouth.

Aly, who lives in Helston, told ITV news: "The earth started to move a bit, started to tremor.

'LARGE CRASH'

"There was a rather large crash and of course nobody knew what it was.

"We went outside and there were a few other people looking to see what it was as well. We thought at first it could have been a car crash or thunder."

Steve Cowe told Cornwall Live: “We were sat in the living room watching TV and thought it was something crashed into the house or the side of the house, it was that kind of shake.

“In seconds everyone came out of their houses on the street or were looking out the windows.”

How many quakes have hit the UK this year?

There have been 28 earthquakes in the UK since the start of 2019.

But many have been so small they have hardly been felt.

Newdigate, Surrey, has seen three earthquakes registered on February 14, 19 and 27.

They measured 2.4, 2.0 and 3.3 respectively.

He added: “We live near Culdrose thought it was an aircraft crash to begin with. It was too loud for thunder."

Some people who were shaken by the earth moving took to Twitter to share their experience.

One woman tweeted: "Just had a small earthquake in Cornwall. My beer is still standing so we are all good."

Another said: "So we've apparently had a small earthquake in Cornwall. It was such an eerie sensation."

A local resident said: "Loud bang from beneath (I was sat on sofa). Windows shook."

Another added: "Down in West Cornwall and it seems we just had an earthquake! Either that or a sonic boom/explosion of some kind."

Another tweeted: "In the past earthquakes locally gave a minor shaking sensation and ceiling lights moved. This seemed a bit different."

The British Geological Survey said there are around 15 incidents of this size or more in the UK each year, but globally around 700 every day.

Earlier this year, Surrey was rocked by a 3.3 magnitude earthquake on February 27 - just 12 hours after another tremor shook the region.
