A FIRE that broke out on a balcony of a tower block just yards from Grenfell is now "under control".

Up to 70 firefighters tackled the blaze in West London, which erupted on the 12th floor at around 11.39am today.

Thick smoke could be seen coming from the block, which is 200m from Grenfell Tower where 72 people died in a devastating fire in June 2017.

Today's blaze brought back chilling memories for locals of the horrific night the inferno tore through the tower block.

Samantha Findley, 41, said: "I smelled it. So I thought 'let me get out, I'm out'. I grabbed my keys, my phone. I'm out. I'm not seeing where it is or anything. I'm out."

Pointing to the fire-ravaged Grenfell block, she said: "That's Grenfell there as you can see. That was my first instinct when I smelled smoke.

"Everyone is thinking of Grenfell."

While Dhin Chittenden said she cried as she ran down the steps from her 11th floor flat.

The 26-year-old receptionist said she was fearful of a Grenfell-style tragedy.

She said: "I kept thinking about that. If it's happened somewhere else then it could happen again."

FIRE 'UNDER CONTROL'

London Fire Brigade confirmed the fire is now under control and said there were no injuries.

A spokesperson said: "Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to reports of a fire on a balcony at a block of flats in Darfield Way in Notting Hill.

"A balcony on the 12th floor was alight. Crews are speaking to residents in the building to reassure them. "There are no reports of any injuries.

"The Brigade's 999 control officers took 27 calls to the incident.

"The Brigade was called at 1139 and the fire was under control by 1255 but crews will remain on scene this afternoon.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."

The fire at Grenfell Tower left 72 dead and more than 70 others injured on June 14, 2017.

It led to an ongoing public inquiry and anger that the building had been coated in flammable materials.
