A WILDFIRE raged through the night next to homes and a motorway close to the Costa del Sol resort town of Marbella.
Emergency services received reports of a forest fire near the Bello Horizonte area at 8.20pm where residents of 40 houses were evacuated.
The fire burned perilously close to the AP-7 motorway and other major roads in the area just east of Marbella.
A Policia Nacional officer is so far the only known person to have been injured in the blaze after being treated for smoke inhalation.
It took a total of 70 firefighters to control the fire which was reported to be under control by 8am on Friday.
However, around 20 personnel were still on the scene the following morning, the Prevention and Extinction of Forest Fires of Andalusia reported.
Many residents removed their vehicles from the area and used hoses and other tools to set up a fire break.

Marbella Mayor Angeles Muñoz thanked emergency crews for their work in controlling the blaze.
The fire came just 24 hours after a fire in Estepona had been brought under control.
The blaze evicted 2,000 people from their homes and torched an area of around 330 hectares.
