The 26-year-old tried to flee from the bull's path by jumping over a railing but became entangled in the metal bars.

Footage from an onlooker at the running of the bulls event shows a group of men run in front of the animal in the town of Cuellar, an hour-and-a-half's drive north of Madrid.

One man manages to escape and runs down the road and out of sight.

However, the bull stops and hones in on another man seen loitering at the side of the road.

As the bull charges at the new victim, the man makes a desperate attempt to scale the railing but his legs become hopelessly sprayed between the metal bars.

Caught in a compromising position, he struggles to free his legs as the bull continues to charge and strike him in the groin.

Another man attempts to intervene by running out to distract the bull at which point the filming is cut short.

The injured victim was received first aid before he was transferred to hospital.

Town mayor Carlos Fraile said the man is still receiving treatment in hospital, but is said to be in a stable condition.

No other participants were hurt during the event.

The town of Cuellar has hosted bull runs for more than 800 years and are thought to be the oldest in Spain.

In May, a bullfighter's backside was brutally gored by a bull's horns.

French matador Juan Leal took the painful hit during a show at Las Ventas bullring in Madrid.

The Spanish bull fighting industry has a controversial history and continues to divide public opinion.

While some say it is an integral part of the Spanish culture and heritage, others say the cruel sport should be banned.

Bullfighting code stipulates that the matador should first taunt the bull with his cape before sticking sharp swords into the animal.

Public money is continued to be used to subsidise the industry.
