Speaker John Bercow’s wife blows £100k on Jo Malone candles and furnishings at state school
SPEAKER John Bercow’s wife authorised spending £100,000 on Jo Malone candles and posh paint and furnishings at a state school.
Sally Bercow is a governor of the school, controversially named by her husband live on TV during a Commons Brexit debate.
He was blasted for bringing up his kids’ school when telling Cabinet minister Michael Gove to be quiet.
Mr Gove’s son is at the same school in West London. Mrs Bercow is a director and parent governor of the school, which is a charitable company.
Its £260,000-a-year head spent £6,200 on Jo Malone Candles, £15,000 on luxury Farrow & Ball paint and £80,300 on carpets and furniture. All spending is overseen by the governors.
The costs prompted an inquiry by the Department for Education earlier this year, but it found “no breaches”.
Farrow & Ball paint, loved by the elite, is three times the price of Dulux. Jo Malone candles cost up to £300 each.

All spending at the Academy school is overseen by the board of Governors which writes a report for the annual accounts each year and where Sally Bercow is listed.
The school is known as the ‘socialist Eton’ and was where left-winger Tony Benn sent his children.
No one from the school responded when asked about the spending, but in the past the school has said it was justified as the paint is hard-wearing and the candles last longer.
