Labour’s Brexit boss Keir Starmer recorded saying ‘a lot of people’ think the party would do better without Jeremy Corbyn

LABOUR big-hitter Sir Keir Starmer has been caught on tape saying “a lot of people” think the party would do better without Jeremy Corbyn as leader.

In a recording of a conversation with business leaders, the Shadow Brexit Secretary said he was well aware Mr Corbyn was unpopular.

But he said the reality was that party members loved him.

The recording, published by HuffPost UK yesterday, exposes the divisions between Mr Corbyn and frontbenchers, who have tried to oust him.

The pair have repeatedly clashed over Brexit policy with Sir Keir wanting the party to push harder for a second referendum.

Speaking to business leaders in Sunderland, Sir Keir said: “I’m well aware from discussions around the United Kingdom and door-knocking and campaigning and canvassing, that a lot of people think we would do better with a different leader.”

But he went on to say that leaders often faced such criticism.

He added: “Jeremy Corbyn has twice been elected leader of our party and, therefore, is going to be taking us into the next election.

"And that is the political reality of the situation that we are in.”

However, he said the 'political reality' of the situation is that party members love him and he's been elected as leader twice
