Jeremy Hunt fears the PM’s Brexit deal could leave Britain in a ‘Turkey trap’ with more than 30 years of negotiations
He is said to have warned Theresa May she risks leaving the nation in limbo like Turkey, which has been stuck in EU talks over its status for 31 years
JEREMY Hunt reportedly fears the PM’s Brexit deal could leave the UK in a “Turkey trap” – pointing out Turkey has been stuck in EU negotiations over its status for 31 YEARS.
The foreign secretary is said to have warned Theresa May she risks condemning the country to similar endless negotiations and Parliament will vote the deal down as it currently stands.
The Sun revealed last week how 11 ministers – including Mr Hunt and also then-Brexit secretary Dominic Raab – objected to her plan before going along with it at last week’s cabinet meeting.
But now more detail has emerged about the discussion in the Telegraph, which reported Mr Hunt urged the PM to make last-minute changes to the deal in a bid to get it voted through.
Several other cabinet ministers reportedly also raised serious concerns about a potential Tory rebellion over Brexit, with Mr Hunt claiming 66 MPs may vote against it.
Home secretary Sajid Javid slammed the deal saying it would leave the UK unable to strike free trade deals after Brexit.
While environment secretary Michael Gove, energy secretary Andrea Leadsom, defence secretary Gavin Wililamson, transport secretary Chris Grayling, and international development secretary Penny Mordaunt were said to have shared Mr Hunt’s concerns.
