Andrea Leadsom vows Britain will take back control from EU under PM’s deal
Minister explains why she has chosen to back Theresa May's Brexit dea
COMMONS Leader Andrea Leadsom insists Britain WILL take back control from the EU under the PM’s deal — despite Tory colleagues’ “half- in half-out” jibes.
The key Cabinet Brexiteer said Parliament making its own laws was “absolutely key” to her decision to back Theresa May.
She also slammed claims the deal would leave the UK following EU rules without having power over them — saying we never had much power anyway.
Ms Leadsom said: “People say we always had a seat at the EU table — the reality is we are one of 28 members. Most decisions were taken on qualified majority.”
Speaking at Liverpool John Moores University on Friday, she added that most of the EU’s rules on agri-food and other goods are international rules.
She continued: “So it is a point of principle that my [anti-deal] Brexit colleagues are making, not a point of practicality — because in practical terms we would be likely to follow those rules anyway.”
On Wednesday, long-time Eurosceptic Ms Leadsom revealed she had agreed to back the PM’s deal after weeks of opposing it.
