Tory voters say the party’s MPs should back Theresa May’s Brexit deal in Tuesday’s crunch vote
A leaked memo reveals that 57 per cent of people who backed the party in 2017, say they believe MPs would be right to support Theresa May's EU agreement
TORY MPs should back Theresa May’s Brexit deal in this week’s crunch vote – according to party voters.
Fifty-seven per cent of people say Conservative MPs must back her EU agreement, a leaked memo shows.
But the internal Tory polling, questioning those who backed the party in 2017 in seats they won, also shows that 25 per cent were opposed to the plan.
It also showed nearly half, 49 per cent, of all Leave voters in these constituencies say MPs should vote for the deal.
Overall, fifty-two per cent of Tory supporters who voted for them 18 months ago say the reason MPs may not back the deal is they weren’t acting in the national interest.
But in a second damning poll, around six in 10 Brits agree that the PM and her negotiating team are responsible for failing to land a good deal.
Voters are split on what Mrs May should do next if her deal is defeated in the Commons on Tuesday night.
Three in ten believe she should hold a second referendum, 27 per cent say she should renegotiate with Brussels and 23 per cent say she should pursue a no deal outcome.
Only one in five believe she should stand down as PM and force a leadership contest and only 15 per cent think she should persist with trying to get her deal through Parliament.
Twice as many people would prefer to return to the ballot box in a referendum rather than a general election if MPs kick out her Brexit proposals.
NO END OF EXIT TALKS
FORMER Tory leader Michael Howard yesterday claimed discussions are ongoing between the EU and Britain over a No Deal Brexit.
Lord Howard said a Cabinet member had told him talks were under way should the Commons not pass a withdrawal agreement.
