Theresa May ‘ditches election promises’ on social care and education to fund preparations for No Deal Brexit

Reform of social care is likely to get the axe, and plans for a new technical education system.

Yesterday ministers vowed to step up planning for a No Deal Brexit, with £2billion more cash going to fund several departments to help them get ready.

With 100 days to go until Brexit day today, businesses were told they must start planning for us to leave without a deal.

Households are set to get more information in the coming weeks, and it could include leaflets to homes on what to do.

HMRC will give out details to 80,000 businesses later today to explain the changes and what they need to do.

The news comes as:

• Ministers unveiled the post-Brexit immigration system, which will end preferential treatment for EU migrants
• But Sajid Javid refused to commit to slashing the numbers to below 100,000
• Immigration staff may be deployed to the borders to deal with a No Deal Brexit
• Philip Hammond was accused of hoarding urgently needed Brexit cash by ministers
• And Dominic Raab said the £39billion divorce bill should be given to businesses in tax cuts to pay for preparations

The Cabinet spent three hours yesterday thrashing out plans to make Britain ready to quit without a deal in March.

Ministers voted to approve the decision to ramp up No Deal contingency plans after the marathon Downing Street talks.

Civil servants will work through Christmas to ensure that Britain is prepared for any contingency.

The Prime Minister's spokesman said: "Cabinet agreed that with just over three months until we exit from the European Union we have now reached the point where we need to ramp up these preparations.

"This means we will now set in motion the remaining elements of our No Deal plans."
