Up to 100 furious Labour MPs will demand Jeremy Corbyn back a People’s Vote on Brexit
JEREMY CORBYN was last night urged to back a People’s Vote by the end of week – as furious MPs demanded he “get off the fence”.
Sources claimed up to 100 Labour MPs would today “pivot” to a backing a second referendum – and urge the Labour leader to back them.
Labour ‘Remainer’ Chuka Umunna told The Sun the Labour leader had to stand by the party’s agreed policy and support a second referendum “by the end of the week”.
Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer had earlier broke ranks with the leadership and admitted a People’s Vote “had to be discussed”.
Labour has only so far committed to consider a People’s Vote as an “option” if the party cannot secure a General Election through a no-confidence vote.
The move came as SNP leader Ian Blackford yesterday tore into Mr Corbyn’s dithering over whether to back a new poll in the Commons.
Speaking in the Brexit debate he told MPs that the negotiating deadline with the EU had to be extended beyond March 29 to allow the time to go back to the people.
And addressing Labour benches directly he said: “I’m appealing to the Labour party, for goodness sake, get off the fence.
“The young people that voted for Labour in 2017 will never forgive the leader of the opposition and his colleagues.
"If you’re serious about politics then grow up and accept responsibility.”
