French President Emmanuel Macron says the EU will still not help revamp Theresa May’s Brexit deal after huge Commons defeat
EMMANUEL Macron declared the EU would still not help revamp Theresa May’s Brexit deal despite last night’s huge defeat.
The French leader said Brussels would offer only “improvements on one or two things” and told Britain to “figure it out yourselves”.
He predicted Britain would have to delay Brexit because leaving with no deal would be too “scary”.
He said the impasse “creates a great deal of uncertainty and worries” and added that UK would eventually end up trying to “take more time to renegotiate something”.
Officials in Brussels indicated an emergency summit of EU leaders was now off the table due to the huge size of the defeat.
Germany’s Europe minister Michael Roth branded the result “a disaster”.
European Parliament’s Brexit chief Guy Verhofstadt accused British MPs of not knowing what they wanted.
He tweeted: “The UK Parliament has said what it doesn’t want.
"Now is the time to find out what UK parliamentarians want.”
Downing Street last night said there were no plans for the PM to visit Brussels in the coming days.
