Bitter split emerges after Amber Rudd publicly challenges Leave supporter Penny Mordaunt over a No Deal Brexit

Ms Mordaunt claimed No Deal was better than a bad deal, adding that it would be 'appalling' not to honour the result of the referendum

A BITTER CABINET split over Brexit erupted yesterday as Amber Rudd publicly challenged Penny Mordaunt over a No Deal.

Ms Mordaunt, International Aid Secretary, broke cover to claim No Deal is better than a bad deal and it would be “appalling” not to honour the result of the 2016 Referendum.

Taking to social media yesterday, she said those supporting a No Deal may have realised the “upsides of leaving outweigh the downsides of staying”

But just moments later, Ms Rudd replied on Twitter by posting a link to a CBI warning business was united in saying No Deal was “unmanageable”.

Her post was backed by another ‘Remainer’, Justice Secretary David Gauke.

The latest hostilities come just days after The Sun revealed Amber Rudd, the Work and Pensions Secretary, and Mr Gauke had urged the PM to open talks with Labour MPs to break the Brexit deadlock.

Penny Mordaunt was a key figure in the Vote Leave campaign in the Referendum.

She had been expected to resign in protest at Theresa May’s soft Brexit deal before vowing to stay on.

Ms Mordaunt said: “It’s only when No Deal is Better than a Bad Deal is believed by the EU that we’ll maximise our chance of a deal.”
