Ms Onn said she'd have to quit if the party did decide to get behind a second Brexit vote.

She and others met with the Labour team this week to urge the party not to back a so-called 'People's Vote' which could overturn Brexit entirely.

The MP told the Guardian: "It was a meeting for frontbenchers who would find it very difficult to vote for a people’s vote if it was whipped that way.

"We have been supportive of the party’s policy so far to keep us as a strong and united opposition. We have not been as free in our views as some other colleagues, whose views we absolutely respect, but we didn’t want that to be seen as the only set of views that exist."

But many Labour MPs, especially ones representing Northern seats which tended to vote Leave, are worried they could be booted out by their constituents in a furious backlash.

However, Wes Streeting told his constituents in Leave-voting Ilford North this week: "I would rather tell it how it is and risk losing my job, than stay silent and risk my constituents losing theirs."

The party's vote of no confidence in the PM failed last week, meaning they can't kick her out of office for the time being.

Last night Labour's shadow chancellor John McDonnell said it was "highly likely" the party would back a plan to stop a No Deal Brexit from happening.

And he said that any referendum that were to be held should include a choice between the Brexit deal on the table, or remaining in the EU.
