MEPS' WAIT FEAR

Tory MEPs beg Theresa May to avoid Brexit delay so they can ‘get on with their lives’

TORY MEPs have pleaded with Theresa May to do all she can to avoid delaying Brexit - telling her: “We want to get on with our lives.”

The PM met them for their last Downing Street meeting on Monday before they leave the European Parliament.

An MEP in the meeting said she refused to rule out extending Article 50.

And ministers told MEPs in a separate meeting in Westminster this week that a short extension of a few weeks is likely in order to get key Brexit legislation through Parliament before our exit.

But they said they were reassured over her opposition to delaying the process.

She told them she was worried that any delay would “undermine public trust in politicians” and would trigger a damaging “loss of democracy”.

The Tory MEPs warned that an extension would not only disrupt their own lives but trigger resentment with other EU member states who are taking over Britain’s allocation of MEPs.

They said they could just about stomach an extension to July 1 but any extension beyond that would be “chaotic” because of the European Parliament elections in May.

One MEP told The Sun: “We want to get on with our lives and you’re going to cause resentment amongst our colleagues - especially if you start messing with their elections, getting involved in elections.”
