Donald Tusk made ‘huge mistake’ by saying Brexiteers should go to hell, David Davis blasts

SNEERING Eurocrat Donald Tusk will drive MORE Brits to back Brexit, David Davis warned last night.

The former Brexit Secretary joked that the Eurocrat could "join us" in hell after Mr Tusk claimed Brexiteers were damned.

It came as even EU leaders began to turn on the European Council president's jibes.

Mr Tusk sparked fury yesterday as he said: "I have been wondering what that special place in hell looks like for those who promoted Brexit without even a sketch of a plan to carry it out safely."

Asked about the blast on ITV's Peston, Mr Davis quipped: "Perhaps he'll join us there!"

But he added: “When people throw insults around, it says more about them than the people they are insulting.

“What this is telling you is that they are getting nervous, they are getting twitchy.

"The very great mistake Mr Tusk made today was that he didn’t think about the impact of voters on that sort of comment because they’ll be resentful of that. You’ll have Remainers turning into Leavers on the back of Mr Tusk’s comment."

Labour Brexiteer Dennis Skinner also took aim at Mr Tusk in the House of Commons - saying: "This is the answer to Donald Tusk - to get out of hell, we've got to fly a rocket!"

Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki, a political rival of Mr Tusk, had a further dig at his comments.

He tweeted: "Instead of sending anyone to hell, let's find a solution together that is good for the EU and also allows us to have a strong economic partner in the UK after Brexit."

Even mild-mannered Bank of England chief Mark Carney criticised the top Eurocrat, saying: "If one wants to be theological, do not judge or you too will be judged."

Today Theresa May is meeting Mr Tusk and other European leaders in Brussels for talks on the Brexit backstop.
