Jeremy Corbyn refuses to rule out cancelling Brexit to stop No Deal after EU talks

JEREMY Corbyn refused to rule out cancelling Brexit next week to stop No Deal minutes after holding talks with EU chiefs in Brussels.

The Labour leader said he was “determined” to avoid a “crash out” after meeting with Michel Barnier and top eurocrat Martin Selmayr yesterday.

He blasted Theresa May for trying to blackmail parliament into backing her agreement by “running down the clock” until our exit date.

But asked whether he would support a revocation of Article 50 to stop no deal from happening, he replied: “These are hypotheticals.

“We believe we can construct a majority that will prevent the crashing out and all the chaos that will come from crashing out.

“That’s what we’re absolutely focussed on.”

Mr Corbyn said he was seeking cross-party agreement on a “future relationship with the EU that could be negotiated during an extension period”.

He said: “The problem is that the PM seems to think that she can run down the clock by constantly threatening the British parliament with a no deal exit unless they support her deal.

“I do not believe there’s a majority for her deal. I do believe there’s a majority for saying a no deal is unacceptable, and we can construct a majority for our proposals.”

Mr Corbyn also blamed “confusion” for him storming out of a meeting with the PM because former Labour MP Chuka Umunna was present.

Yesterday EU Parliament chief Antonio Tajani said he would be “happy” if Mrs May cancelled Brexit “but that’s a choice for the UK to make”.

Senior EU diplomats said Britain has the “nuclear option” of withdrawing its intention to leave before midnight next Friday to avoid no deal.

A Labour spokesman said: “As we have always said, we respect the result of the referendum and will do whatever is necessary to prevent a no deal outcome. We do not believe that revoking Article 50 is in any way necessary.”
