MADHOUSE OF COMMONS

Brexit plunged into farce as clueless MPs take control of Parliament and disagree on all EIGHT options

BREXIT was plunged into farce yesterday as clueless MPs took control of Parliament but couldn’t agree on any of eight ideas to break the stalemate.

None of the indicative votes put before the Commons managed to secure a majority.

As a result the options — including revoking Article 50, a customs union, and a second referendum — are set to be put before Parliament again on Monday.

Rebels led by Sir Oliver Letwin had seized control of business to allow MPs to have their say on Brexit.

But when the results were announced, the expected winner — a call from Tory MP Ken Clarke for Britain to sign up to the EU customs union — lost by 264 votes to 272.

A separate push for a second referendum was rejected by 295 votes to 268.

Ministers last night gloated that the results showed the PM’s Brexit deal was the “best compromise” available.

'DISAPPOINTED'

Theresa May secured 242 votes when her deal was voted down for a second time earlier this month.

Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay declared last night: “This demonstrates there are no easy options.” To joke calls from backbenchers to “resign”, Tory grandee Sir Oliver admitted the results were a “disappointment”. The events ripped up 140 years of convention.

Sir Oliver insisted his move was not an “insurgency”. But he said: “This process has come about as a result of increasing concern that we were heading towards a No Deal Brexit.”

Labour’s Margaret Beckett cheered Remainers by leading calls for a second referendum to avoid “the establishment stitch-up of all time”.

But colleague Kate Hoey, a Leave supporter, said calls for another public vote would alienate voters in the Midlands and North who switched from Ukip in 2017.

She said: “They were told their vote mattered whatever the decision.

“Now we have people saying ‘You were too stupid to vote the right way’.”
