THERESA May should invite Labour and the SNP to join her Government, John Major said today.
The ex-PM insisted the radical step was needed to break the Brexit deadlock and solve Britain's national crisis.
Sir John claimed a "unity Government" of all parties was the only way to ensure Mrs May can get a Commons majority.
The extreme move would produce the first cross-party Government since WW2 when Churchill teamed up with Labour.
The former Prime Minister, who wants to see Brexit cancelled, told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "If we don't get a Government with a clear majority then I think it would be in the national interest to have a cross-party Government.
"I think we may be driven to a national Government.
"Whosoever is Prime Minister would have to invite people in from other parties so that you can guarantee a majority in Parliament.
"In the interests of the nation, we must have a Government that has a working majority."
Sir John claimed that holding a General Election would fail to solve the political crisis.
He said: "We might be driven to it later but now is certainly not the moment."
Senior Tories such as Nicky Morgan have previously floated the idea of a cross-party Government.
They have reportedly held talks with moderate Labour figures such as Yvette Cooper.
