Theresa May sets new June 30 deadline for Brexit deal as ‘toxic’ EU elections approach
The PM fears disaster if a Brexit deal isn't agreed by the Commons in time for the summer holidays
THERESA May has earmarked June 30 as the deadline for cutting a Brexit deal, it emerged today.
The PM is desperate for a deal in time for the summer holidays - or Britain will see the Brexit dream slip away.
Mrs May is still fighting to leave the EU before next month's European Parliament elections.
A senior Government source today said it would be "toxic" for Britain to have to take part in the polls on May 23.
But the PM has just a couple of weeks to get a deal through the Commons in order to avoid participating.
The source said: "Every day we don’t pass it we get closer to having to take part in European elections. But we’re not there yet."
If Mrs May fails, June 30 would become the "next massive deadline" for the Government.
The newly elected MEPs would never have to take their seats if Brexit got sorted before the end of June.
The Prime Minister will come under more pressure than ever if Britain is still in the EU by the time MPs break up for the summer.
Furious Tory backbenchers would be certain to launch a new campaign to oust her in protest.
The Government had been considering a fourth vote on the Brexit deal as soon as next week.

But it now seems unlikely the vote will take place before the local elections on May 2.
Mrs May has rejected calls to push a motion which would approve the withdrawal agreement on the condition the Irish backstop is removed.
She claims it would be pointless because the EU would never accept the gambit.
