Instead, hundreds just wrote "Brexit" on their ballot papers or scrawled angry messages to do-nothing MPs.

Both the Tories and Labour have lost councillors across the country with the Lib Dems and independent campaigners making big gains.

Nigel Farage's Brexit Party wasn't standing in the polls - meaning many Leave supporters refused to vote at all.

Brexiteers took to social media to share pictures of their defaced ballots.

One wrote: "I cannot vote for any of these parties - all have blocked the biggest vote in UK democracy.

"Brexit must be delivered for the UK people."

Another stormed: "Get May out and us out of the EU.

A voter in Liverpool crossed out every single box on the paper and simply wrote "Brexit means Brexit" instead.

Senior Tories have slammed Theresa May for failing to take Britain out of the EU on time.

Tim Warren, leader of Bath and North East Somerset council, said: "We were being told on the streets that they couldn’t trust the Conservatives any more, wouldn’t vote for the Conservatives because of Brexit, basically."

Jeremy Corbyn is also under fire over his Brexit fudge as Labour continues to sit on the fence.

Sunderland council boss Greme Miller blasted: "I have lost ten councillors tonight because of that Brexit situation."
