BREX WRECKERS

Remainer MPs launch fresh bid to make No Deal Brexit impossible in case Boris becomes PM

REMAINER MPs today launched a fresh bid to make a No Deal Brexit impossible - in case Boris Johnson becomes PM.

A cross-party group will tomorrow mount an attempt to seize control of the Commons agenda.

That would give them the power to vote on ruling out a No Deal even if the new Tory leader adopts it as a policy.

It came as Theresa May warned the warring leadership candidates they won't have an easier time than she did in trying to push Brexit through Parliament.

The controversial motion was tabled today by Jeremy Corbyn, SNP boss Ian Blackford and the Lib Dems' Vince Cable.

It was also signed by Oliver Letwin - the veteran Tory MP who has masterminded previous attempts to grab control of Parliament.

The cross-party move will be voted on by MPs tomorrow.

If it is successful, backbenchers would have control over the Commons timetable on June 25.

They would then use that day to pass legislation which would block a No Deal exit - probably by introducing a law to cancel Brexit entirely if Britain is set to leave without a deal on October 31.

The manoeuvre is similar to the Brexit delay forced by MPs in March.

POWER GRAB

Labour's Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer said: "The debate on Brexit in the Tory leadership contest has descended into the disturbing, the ludicrous and the reckless.

"We have witnessed candidates openly advocating a damaging No Deal Brexit and even proposing dragging the Queen into politics by asking her to shut down Parliament to achieve this.

"MPs cannot be bystanders while the next Tory Prime Minister tries to crash the UK out of the European Union without a deal and without the consent of the British people.

"That’s why we are taking this latest measure to end the uncertainty and protect communities across the country."

The support of Sir Oliver suggests the motion may have enough backing tomorrow to pass.

If all Opposition MPs vote for it, it would need just three Tories to go through.

Leadership candidates including Boris, Dominic Raab and Andrea Leadsom have vowed to pursue a No Deal Brexit if they can't get better terms from Brussels.

If the Commons votes to stop a No Deal in law it will set up a massive constitutional crisis and could lead to an early General Election.

Tory MP Jackie Doyle-Price blasted: "It’s happening. Parliament is trying to block No Deal. Leaving before October 31 looking almost impossible."

Speaking at a Cabinet meeting this morning, Mrs May warned ministers - including five leadership contenders - that Parliament will remain bitterly divided even after she quits next month.

She said: "There were as many people, if not more, on the stop no deal side as in the ERG who would not support my deal.
