Jeremy Corbyn will BLOCK an election unless he can also ram through law to stop No Deal

JEREMY Corbyn said he will refuse to back the PM’s bid today to hold an election – unless he can also ram through a law to stop a No Deal.

The Labour leader has spent the past two years furiously calling for another general election.

But he is now demanding a cast iron guarantee Brexit will be delayed before he will order his MPs to support Boris Johnson’s snap general election.

Corbyn demanded legislation to delay Brexit is passed before any election is triggered, after Johnson was defeated in the Commons last night.

Gesturing to the PM, he told the Commons: “He wants to table a motion for a general election. Fine.
“Get the Bill through first in order to take No Deal off the table.”

Hours earlier, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab mocked the Labour boss for carrying out the “mother of all U-turns”.

A Government source said: “Labour would look like f****** clowns if they vote against so bring it on.”

ELECTION BLOCK

Labour MP John Mann furiously accused his leadership of “spitting on the working class” by trying to block Brexit.

Boris needs two thirds of MPs to back him to force an election – giving Labour an effective veto.

Mr Corbyn held talks with the Brexit-bashing Lib Dems and SNP yesterday to work on their plot to stop Britain leaving the EU on October 31.

Speaking afterwards, he said: “Labour wants to prevent a No Deal Brexit, and to have a general election, so we can end austerity and invest in our communities.

“I am confident we can have both, and we’ve been in discussions about a way to achieve this.”

Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry last night back Corbyn's vow that Labour will not vote for Boris’ election.
She said: "There’s not going to be a general election tomorrow, because we’re not going to vote for it, because we have to make sure this legislation [blocking No Deal] has been embedded."

Labour will only support Boris’ election bid if they can come up with a “mechanism” to make sure a No Deal can also be blocked.

Labour MPs have warned their boss not to fall into the “trap” of backing Boris’ election.

They are terrified Boris will change the election day date until after October 31 so he can force through Brexit.

Downing Street insiders branded their fears “tinfoil hat stuff”.

And Mr Mann, who backs Brexit, lashed his leadership’s petty parliamentary tricks.

Oh these clever people. Let’s spit on the working class and a majority of the electorate. Stop Brexit. Then ask them to vote us into power. We are dealing with people who don’t respect the views of the people

In a fiery tweet, he raged: “Oh these clever people. Let’s spit on the working class and a majority of the electorate. Stop Brexit. Then ask them to vote us into power.

“We are dealing with people who don’t respect the views of the people.”

Labour’s chief whip Nick Brown told party MPs last night they will not “walk into the elephant trap” of handing Boris the power to hold an election when he wants.

He said Labour are trying to hatch a plot to push through legislation to seize control of when an election is called.

He suggested an election could be held in December instead.

It comes as a new poll reveals that just one in three Brits (35 per cent) want a snap election.

Jeremy Corbyn says the government is playing Russian roulette with Britain's future during emergency debate to prevent No Deal Brexit

The YouGov survey of 1,639 voters for The Times found nearly half (46 per cent) of Brits oppose a new poll while the rest said they don’t know.

It highlights the high-stakes gamble Boris is taking by proposing the snap poll.

When Theresa May called an election in 2017 the news was memorably summed up by Brenda from Bristol who greeted the news with the words “Oh no, not another one.”
