He has been charged alongside former chief of staff Gareth Arnold, 28, who faces six counts of fraud.

The CPS said O'Mara and a third man, John Woodliff, 42, were also charged with a Proceeds of Crime Act offence.

The three men will appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on September 24.

O'Mara succeeded Nick Clegg as Sheffield Hallam's MP in 2017 but quit before the December 2019 general election.

He served as an Independent MP from October 2017.

Rosemary Ainslie, head of Special Crime at the CPS, said: “The charges relates to an allegation he made fraudulent invoices to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority".
