Donald Trump confirms he will meet Kim Jong-un on June 12 for landmark summit in Singapore
DONALD Trump has said he will meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un on June 12 for a landmark summit in Singapore.
The US President revealed the date and location of their much-anticipated showdown on Twitter, hours after three American detainees were released from the rogue nation.
Trump said: “We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!”
Speaking at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, following the safe arrival of Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak Song and Tony Kim, Trump said a nuclear deal with Kim would be his “proudest achievement”.
He added: “This is what people have been waiting for, for a long time.
Nobody thought we could be on this track in terms of speed.”
Speaking of the former detainees, he said: “We want to thank Kim Jong-un.
"I’m very honoured to have helped the three folks.
"They’re great people.
“This is a special night for these three really great people.
"But the true honour is going to be if we have a victory in getting rid of nuclear weapons.
“We’re starting off on a new footing.
"I really think we have a very good chance of doing something very meaningful.”
Kim is only known to have travelled outside the Korean Peninsula once since taking command of North Korea in 2011.
"He made a trip by train to Beijing at the end of March.

Former CIA director and current Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has met with Kim on two separate trips inside North Korea.
With the Demilitarized Zone on the Korean Peninsula out of contention, the small nation of Singapore was the natural choice for the historic summit.
Among the factors are its proximity to North Korea, the experience of its security forces and the fact that Pyongyang has had diplomatic relations with the country since 1975.
