Scots rapist Stephen Charters found dead in prison days after being jailed
A NOTORIOUS sex beast who was given an Order of Lifelong Restriction last week has been found dead in jail.
Stephen Charters was sentenced to five years in jail and was due to be subject to conditions and monitoring for the rest of his life.
A probe has been launched after his body was discovered in the Hermiston Hall at Saughton prison in Edinburgh.
The 57-year-old, former worship leader, attacked his teenage victim at a hotel in Edinburgh after she had a row with her boyfriend and appealed to Charters for assistance finding somewhere to stay.
But instead he booked into a hotel and subjected her to sex acts before raping her.
He was convicted last year of nine offences - including rape and sexual assault - against four victims between November 1984 and October 2015.
Tonight a prison source told how fellow inmates had been “kept in their cells” after his body was discovered.
The insider said: “We didn’t know what was going on but everyone was in their cells after his body was found.
“We knew it was something serious but no one had a clue.

“Then we found out Charters was dead. He only came in last week.
“There are all sorts of stories doing the rounds but I am not really sure what has happened.”
Charters served a previous five-year jail term in 2016 for sex crimes against children.
Lady Carmichael told him his offences had caused "serious and enduring harm".
"You present a high risk of further sexual offending," she said.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Sunday, 19 June, 2022, officers were made aware of the death of a male within HMP Edinburgh.
"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
"You have a limited capacity for change."
A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson declined to comment.
