Arthur’s Seat wildfire crews ‘set to work through the night’ after hillside devastated by flames and casualty rescued on stretcher

Six engines have raced to the scene after flames were spotted spreading along a large area of grass

BLAZE crews battling a wildfire raging on Arthur's Seat are set to work through the night after flames devastated the hillside.

Six engines were scrambled to the popular Edinburgh landmark at 1.40pm this afternoon after flames were spotted spreading along an area of grass and gorse.

One person was pulled off the hillside on a stretcher while smoke billowed across the city.

Local vlogger captured rescue teams in action just hours after the blaze broke out.

Now nine hours on, firefighters are still battling the flames and say they expect to be working til the early hours.


Emergency services say the casualty suffered a leg injury - however it is not known if it is connected to the blaze.

Worried locals looked on in shock, posting their fears on social media.

 

Jefferson Shirley said: "Fire on Arthur's Seat? Smoke is coming off the side.

"Our kid asked if the volcano was erputing."

 

Fred Ingleby posted: "Arthurs Seat on fire.

"Gorse fire not looking great, wind causing it to spread very quickly!"

 

And Janine Fairgrieve said: "Huge fire on Arhur's seat!"

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 1.40pm on Sunday May 20 to reports of a large area of grass on fire near Arthurs Seat, Edinburgh.

"Operations control mobilised six fire engines to the scene and firefighters are working to contain and extinguish the flames.

"One casualty suffering from a suspected leg injury was assisted to a place of safety before they were transferred into the care of parademics.

"Crews currently remain on the scene."
