A MAN has died and several other people have been rushed to hospital after a minibus overturned in the Scottish Borders.

Emergency services after the smash on the A6089 between Carfraemill and Gordon just before 11am this morning.

The private minibus, travelling from Newtongrange to Kelso, was carrying 23 adult passengers plus the driver.

Police have confirmed one male passenger was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and his family have been informed.

Twenty-two other passengers and the driver were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment.

Their conditions are currently unknown.

The incident was initially declared a major incident as ambulance teams and Scottish Fire and Rescue service assisted in the emergency incident.

The road remains closed in both directions as Road Policing officers continue their investigation into the crash.

Chief Inspector Steven Duncan of the Lothians & Scottish Borders Police Division said: "We're providing ongoing support to the family of the man who tragically lost his life, along with those who have been injured and their families.

"Our Road Policing Unit, together with partners, are currently working to establish the full circumstances surrounding this.

"We'd ask anyone who may be concerned that a loved one has been affected, or anyone who could help with our investigation, to get in touch immediately via 101 and quote incident number 1369 of 29th December."
