Edinburgh lecturer who quoted Trainspotting ‘English are w****rs’ scene reported to cops over ‘hate speech’

A SCOTS uni lecturer was reported to cops over a ‘hate speech’ after he quoted a Trainspotting scene calling English people “w****rs”.
James Mooney quoted a scene from the iconic movie on social media where he included the insult aimed at the English.
The film and philosophy lecturer, at Edinburgh University, wrote the post after showing the film, starring Ewan McGregor, to a group of students visiting from the US.
His post said: “Spent this morning telling a group of visiting American students that we don’t *really* hate the English, but that they *are* wankers. Welcome to Scotland.”
Cops confirmed officers were called to investigate the Instagram post after receiving a complaint but they found that no crime had been committed.
And the university insisted the post was simply meant as a joke as they branded it “ridiculous” that anyone would find it offensive.
A source told : “It was clearly meant in jest and no offence was intended or could reasonably have been taken. It is all totally ridiculous, a storm in a teacup if ever there was one.”

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed officers received a report last month of “xenophobic comments made online” in relation to Mr Mooney’s Instagram post.
The spokesman added: “A full investigation was conducted and it was established that no crime had been committed. However, the matter was recorded as a hate incident.
“No further police action was required.”
Senior university staff reviewed the post and deemed it not to breach their social media policy.
