A SCOTS dad dodged an airport charge for being over his luggage allowance – by taking dozens of items of clothing out and wearing them all at once.

John Irvine, 46, and his family were stunned when they discovered the case was 8kgs over the limit as they made their way home from a holiday in Nice, France.

But when they were told they faced being charged for the extra weight on their flight back to Glasgow, John, from Bearsden, told the airline worker: “Hen, watch this.”

Rather than pay extra for the excess weight, he decided to lighten the load a little by emptying several shirts, t-shirts and jumpers from the bag and pulling them on – one over the other.

Son Josh, 17, was left in stitches as his dad put on “about 15” extra layers.

And he said his father was left “sweating” as he captured the hilarious incident on video.

Josh told Scottish Sun Online: “The lassie at the counter asked us if we wanted to pay extra but my dad just looked up at her and said ‘hen, watch this’.

“He zipped open the suitcase and quickly flung on about 15 jumpers to help cut down the weight.”

Josh said airport staff saw the funny side after watching John pile on the extra layers.

But he revealed they feared they wouldn’t make it through security as guards were suspicious of the amount of clothing John was wearing.

Josh added: “The staff were in stitches but trying to get through security was a struggle because they thought he was trying to smuggle something under all his clothes.

“Thankfully we got through eventually.”
