A HIPSTER 'sugar free' bakery has been served an £8,000 fine for a string of offences - including using sugar.

But inspectors found it was making "incorrect nutritional claims" by using sugar from fruit.

It was also adding sweetener Stevia, which is not allowed in baked goods.

Islington Sugar Free Bakery Ltd and owner Romeo Dalh both admitted seven food hygiene and food standards offences, at a hearing at Highbury Magistrates' Court on September 8.

The fine and cost totalled £8,087.50.

Cllr Andy Hull, of Islington Council,said: "Our residents and visitors expect and deserve good standards from food businesses in Islington.

"However when serious problems are found and standards are not met, as in this case, we will take action."
