Her devastated family have paid tribute to the pretty 24-year-old, who was originally from the Leicester area.

In a statement they said: "Alice saw the fun side of everything, she had an infectious personality and an incredible sense of humour.

"She was kind, clever and beautiful; we are struggling to come to terms with the fact that she is not with us anymore.

"She loved life, loved her friends and loved her job. She had so much to live for. Nothing, nothing can ever replace her."

Alice, who had previous contact with police, suffered severe injuries and paramedics battled to save her.

She was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Alice was a former pupil at £11,000-a-year Leicester High School for Girls where her mum Susan is a teacher.

Headteacher Alan Whelpdale informed parents of the tragic news in an email saying: "I am very sad to inform you that Dr Hills' daughter, Alice, a former student at LHS, was found dead yesterday in Gateshead.

"The police are supporting and comforting the family in these difficult circumstances.

"I have spoken, very briefly, with Dr Hills this morning, and she knows she has my total support at this very tragic time.

"I informed the chair of governors and staff early this morning; the girls have been informed this afternoon.

"Reverend Neil, the school chaplain, has been in school supporting me, the staff and our girls.

";As parents, I think it is important for you to know the situation before your daughters return home today as they may well be upset.

"I know your prayers will be with Dr Hills and her family."

The case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission due to previous contact with the victim.
