Why is Prince Harry's book called Spare?

Spare is ready to hit the shelves - and for Prince Harry it's a chance to tell his side of the story.

Publishers have vowed the book is written with ''raw, unflinching honesty'' as well as being ''full of insight, revelation, self-
examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.''

Publisher Penguin Random House's also added: ''Spare takes readers immediately back to one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror.

''As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.''

But why is the book titled Spare?

The title likely refers to "the heir and the spare", a saying used to describe Harry and his brother Prince William.

Where does the 'heir and spare' phrase come from?

The phrase "heir and spare" highlights the distinction between the eldest child who is destined to inherit their parent's fortune, power and position - which in this case is Prince William - and their younger siblings, also known as "spares" who are unlikely to never ascend to the throne.

Princess Margaret, younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, was also famously considered to be a royal "spare".

When will Prince Harry's book be released?

Prince Harry's book will be published globally on January 10, 2023, by Penguin Random House - and it will be available to buy in 16 different languages.

Some of those languages include - Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Italian.

Spare will be available in both print and digital formats, as well as an unabridged audio edition of the book.

The audio edition of the book will be released on January 10, 2023 and will be read by the prince himself.

The book will be priced at £28, however the kindle edition is slightly cheaper at £13.99.

Speaking on the release of Spare, Global CEO of Penguin Random House Markus Dohle said: ''Penguin Random House is honoured to be publishing Prince Harry’s candid and emotionally powerful story for readers everywhere.

''He shares a remarkably moving personal journey from trauma to healing, one that speaks to the power of love and will inspire and encourage millions of people around the world.”

In a bid to support British charities, Prince Harry will be donating some of the proceeds of his book.

The Duke of Sussex has already donated $1,500,000 to Sentebale - an organisation he founded with Prince Seeiso in their mothers’ legacies.

The charity supports vulnerable children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana affected by HIV/AIDS.

Prince Harry will also donate £300,000 to the non-profit organisation WellChild which he has been royal patron of for fifteen years.
