The Crown viewers break down in tears at Princess Diana’s death scenes – and William’s ‘harrowing’ reaction

SEASON six of The Crown has been released on Netflix today, and viewers were left breaking down after watching the weeks leading up to Princess Diana's death.

The final series of the Royal drama starts off with an unsuspecting French man witnessing the Princess of Wales' fatal car crash in a Parisian tunnel.

In the following episodes audiences went on to see Diana's body brought home for the funeral and Prince William's heartbreaking reaction to the news of her death.

In one scene the young heir runs away from Balmoral Castle into the Scottish wilderness during a fit of grief and disappears for 14 hours.

Princess Di is also seen appearing as a ghost to her former husband Prince Charles, and the Queen.

Viewers were heartbroken to experience the Princess's death all over again, and flocked to X to share emotional tributes to her after watching The Crown.

One person shared: "Watching the first half of the season knowing what was coming was so dreadful and made every scene more emotional. Princess Diana deserved better."

Another devastated fan wrote: "I've never cried this much when watching The Crown."

A third said watching the show "broke" them, adding: "Prince Charles' reaction from hearing about the passing away of Princess Diana, to meeting her for the last time in the morgue, and bringing her home for the last time was hauntingly beautiful. Beautiful but heartbreaking."

A fourth fretted: "Watching the new season of The Crown and I'm already stressed as f***."

The first four episodes of the latest season are available to stream now on Netflix, with the rest following in December.

After years of separation, Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorced in 1996.

In 1997, Princess Diana spent her summer in the south of France and Italy. During August, she visited Sarajevo, Bosnia, to highlight the fight against landmines.

By the end of the month, the Princess of Wales and Dodi Al-Fayed travelled to Paris together.

It was revealed that Princess Diana stayed longer than planned in Paris due to a row over her land mine campaign.

Travelling in a black Mercedes Benz, Princess Diana was involved in a car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel on August 31, 1997.

The Princess of Wales died at the age of 36.

Her funeral was held on September 6, 1997. As her coffin made the journey from Kensington Palace to Westminister Abbey, Prince William and Prince Harry walked behind their late mother.

Princess Diana's mother, Frances Shand Kydd, and sisters, Jane Fellowes and Sarah McCorquodale, also attended the funeral.
