It is understood the mum-of-three's surgery was not for cancer but the Palace wont speculate on a private medical matter.

The Princess of Wales was taken into hospital for the planned procedure on Tuesday and is said to be recovering well.

A statement from the Palace read: “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate.

"She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.
