PRINCE Philip called Meghan Markle the “D.O.W” after the Duchess of Windsor — the American divorcee who led Edward VIII to abdicate.
And he warned the late Queen to be “cautious” of Prince Harry’s then bride-to-be, a royal author claims.
Ingrid Seward revealed in new book My Mother And I that Prince Philip felt it was “uncanny…how much Meghan reminded him of the Duchess of Windsor”.
While the Queen “approved” of the Suits actress, she thought her wedding dress was “too white” because she had been wed before.
The monarch’s relationship with Harry was badly damaged by his high-handed attitude before and after his wedding, Ingrid Seward reveals in her new book.
She added: “He wasn’t simply referring to the fact that both were pencil-slim, dark-haired and glamorous American divorcees.”
Edward VIII — the late Queen’s uncle — abdicated in 1936 to marry divorcee Wallis.
The couple toured Nazi Germany in 1937 – the year of their marriage – and later settled in the West Indies, having had to flee France when the country fell to Hitler.
The abdication paved the way for Elizabeth II’s father, George VI, to take up the crown.
