The Prince of Wales is now set to bear the brunt of the King's royal duties.

William had cleared his diary to care for his wife Kate and their three children after she underwent abdominal surgery last month.

He planned to step away from royal duties for three-and-a-half weeks - but will now hold at investiture at Windsor Castle tomorrow.

Later the same day, he will attend the London Air Ambulance fundraising gala in London's Raffles Hotel.

reports that William wants to "reassure the public" by stepping in - and could give a heartfelt speech at the gala.

All other working members of the Royal Family are understood to be continuing with public engagements in the King's absence.

But the Princess of Wales is unlikely to be seen carrying out any frontline duties until after Easter, sources say.

The Sun understands Charles and William have become incredibly close in recent months.

The King has been regularly staying at Windsor Castle on Sunday nights to spend time with his eldest son and heir to the throne.

Buckingham Palace released a statement at 6pm yesterday evening announcing the King was undergoing treatment for cancer.

It came the day before the late Queen’s Accession Day, marking the moment she took the throne on February 6 1952 following the death of her father, King George VI.

The statement read: “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a  separate issue of concern was noted.

"Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer. His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

"Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake state business and paperwork as usual.

"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.

"He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

How Charles broke protocol

KING Charles has bravely broken with royal protocol by sharing his cancer diagnosis.

Senior royals have in past been tight-lipped about their health battles.

The last top royal diagnosed with cancer was Charles's grandfather George VI.

Heavy smoker George had his left lung removed for "structural abnormalities" in September 1951, months before he died.

The "abnormalities" were actually a life-threatening carcinoma, but the public never learned about George's cancer ordeal.

Buckingham Palace said Charles wanted to share his cancer diagnosis to boost "public understanding" for cancer patients worldwide.
