Royal expert reveals when George, Charlotte & Louis will see their grandpa Charles for first time since his diagnosis
The children will be going through a 'difficult time' as mum Princess Kate also recovers from her surgery
KING Charles will keep everything ‘as normal as possible’ for grandchildren Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, claimed a Royal expert.
The Monarch, 75, shared his cancer diagnosis in a statement from Buckingham Palace on Monday evening.
It was revealed yesterday the King has begun a schedule of regular treatments and postponed front line duties on the advice of doctors.
The shock diagnosis was delivered after a “separate issue of concern was noted” during His Majesty’s stay at The London Clinic for an enlarged prostate.
Charles had been admitted to hospital on January 26 and left after three days with Queen Camilla by his side.
In an announcement on Monday, a Buckingham Palace spokesman stated: “Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.
How Charles bravely revealed diagnosis to help others
KING Charles has bravely broken with royal protocol by sharing his cancer diagnosis.
Senior royals have in past been tight-lipped about their health battles.
The last top royal diagnosed with cancer was Charles’s grandfather George VI.
Heavy smoker George had his left lung removed for “structural abnormalities” in September 1951, months before he died.
The “abnormalities” were actually a life-threatening carcinoma, but the public never learned about George’s cancer ordeal.
Buckingham Palace said Charles wanted to share his cancer diagnosis to boost “public understanding” for cancer patients worldwide
“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.
“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.
So it might be just the the usual visit to grandpa on a Sunday afternoon, if he’s feeling up to it, I don’t think they’ll be racing around every five minutes.”
Jennie Bond
“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.
“He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.
“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”
What we know so far:
- The King has been diagnosed with a form of cancer
- Prince Harry rushed to the airport in LA to fly home to support his father
- Meghan will remain in California with their children
- The King personally called his siblings and children to tell them of his diagnosis
- Charles is receiving expert care from specialist doctors
- His Majesty returned from Sandringham to London to begin treatment
- Doctors advised the King to postpone public-facing Royal duties
- Camilla and William will step up to share the weight of the King’s duties during his treatment
- Charles will continue to receive Red Boxes and State documents
- Charles and Camilla shared a cancer message just a day before announcing his diagnosis
Now former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond has told it will be a “difficult time” for his grandchildren as their mum Princess Kate also recovers from surgery.
Kate arrived at The London Clinic on January 16 for a planned abdominal operation and stayed at the hospital for nearly two weeks.
The 42-year-old was secretly taken out of the hospital to recover at home, after Prince William took a step back from Royal duties to be by her side.
Their children had been sticking to their normal routine, with Kate’s parents helping with school runs and pick ups.
Royal expert Jennie Bond said: “We have to remember that William and Kate desperately want to keep things as normal as possible for the children.
“So it might be just the the usual visit to grandpa on a Sunday afternoon, if he’s feeling up to it, I don’t think they’ll be racing around every five minutes.”
It comes as their dad Prince William is now expected to ramp up his Royal duties while his father recovers.
It remains unclear when the King will resume full-time public appearances but has postponed front line duties on doctor’s advice.
However Charles will continue with his red boxes, weekly audiences with the Prime Minister, and monthly Privy Council meetings, but they may have to be scaled back on the advice of doctors.
Reacting to the announcement, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was left “shocked and sad”.
The PM said he is thankful the illness was “caught early”, and hopes the monarch makes a speedy recovery.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “All our thoughts are with him and his family.”
He said everyone will be wishing the King “gets the treatment that he needs and makes a full recovery”.
The PM added: “That’s what we’re all hoping and praying for, and I’m of course in regular contact with him and will continue to communicate with him as normal.
“I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well.”
His Majesty carried out a staggering 516 engagements last year, including 94 trips abroad.
CONTINUING ROYAL DUTIES
In the meantime, other Royals, including the Queen will continue with a full programme of public duties.
Provisions for Counsellors of State are made under the Regency Acts 1937 to 1953 and those who can currently stand in for Charles include Queen Camilla, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Sussex, the Duke of York and Princess Beatrice.
However, the House of Lords heard only “working members” of the royal family would be called upon to act as Counsellors of State.
In 2022, the King asked Parliament to add his youngest brother, the Duke of Edinburgh, and sister the Princess Royal as extra Counsellors of State.
This means they too can deputise for him if need be, and the addition was fast-tracked into law.
The Monarch and Queen Camilla were expected to visit Canada in May, and Australia, New Zealand and Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October.
However there is now speculation Prince William may have to step in for the King, who is head of the Commonwealth, at CHOGM.
Other trips could be postponed depending on how the King’s health progresses.
William could also be seen playing a key role at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey at the start of March and the 80th anniversary of D-Day in June.
The prince is set to carry out an investiture at Windsor Castle on Wednesday – one of his own regular duties.
Later the same day, he will attend the London Air Ambulance fundraising gala in London’s Raffles Hotel.
reports that William wants to “reassure the public” by stepping in – and could give a heartfelt speech at the gala.
Meanwhile, the Princess of Wales is unlikely to be seen carrying out any frontline duties until after Easter, sources say.
BRAVE FACE
Queen Camilla also put on a brave face continuing with public appearances in the days before the announcement.
The Queen opened Maggie’s Royal Free – a new cancer support centre at the Royal Free Hospital in London.
It is understood the Queen knew about her husband’s cancer diagnosis when opening the safe space, but decided to go ahead with the engagement.
Camilla smiled as she shook hands with the architectural team and greeted visitors at the centre, which provides support away from the hospital for patients and their families.
As a royal source told the Daily Mail “she’s made of strong stuff”, while a friend said ‘she’s a bl***y brick”.
Princess Anne also kept face during a public appearance on Monday, at the dedication of a new St John Ambulance Community unit in Devizes, Wilts.
HARRY’S HOME
It comes as Prince Harry was spotted at Los Angeles International airport as he made his way to the UK today to be with his father.
The Duke of Sussex, who was informed of the news personally by the Monarch, was seen arriving into a private terminal at LAX in his black Range Rover.
He left Heathrow Airport this afternoon to be with King Charles as soon as possible.
Royal experts claim the news may finally see Harry put his four-year rift aside as the Royal Family pull together in this difficult time.
It is not yet known where Harry will stay while visiting Charles in the UK.
Last year Charles ordered Harry and Meghan to vacate Frogmore Cottage, their home in Windsor.
Meanwhile, floods of support and well-wishes continue to pour in following the health update.
