Kate and William, also 42, met in 2001 at St Andrews in Scotland in their first year of university, and stayed in the same halls of residence, St Salvator's.

They both studied art history and were good friends long before they ever started dating.

The pair lived with each other every year after and as you can imagine, girls would flock to William in some kind of attempt to become the future Queen, but Kate was always there to save the day.

Thanks to Kate’s simple trick, whereby she pretended to be William’s girlfriend before they were actually official, she was able to stop women making advances.

According to their close friend, Wills was often 'too polite' to reject girls when they made advances.

Speaking to royal expert Katie Nicholl for her book Kate: The Future Queen, mutual friend of the couple Laura Warshauer said: "Will was getting really hit on by this girl at a party and it was getting quite uncomfortable because he couldn't shake her off.

"He was being really polite, but this girl just didn't get the hint.

“All of a sudden Kate came up behind him and put her arms around him.

"He said 'Oh, sorry, but I've got a girlfriend', and he and Kate went off giggling."

She also added: "Kate was the only girl in the room who could have done that. And that was just a month after we started university."

I know the real reason Prince William and Kate took so long to get married

According to Laura, the grateful Prince went to thank Kate afterwards.

The young students were friends at first but became “instant companions” after discovering they had the same naughty sense of humour.

Inside Prince William and Kate Middleton's relationship - in their words

AFTER years of dating, Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement on November 16, 2010.

Prince William revealed in their interview with BBC that he knew from the start that Kate was different from other people.

He said in their engagement interview: "From my point of view, when I first met Kate, I knew there was something very special about her.”

When asked what drew them together, it turns out her “naughty sense of humour” was the tipping point.

He said: “She’s got a really naughty sense of humour, which really helps me because I’ve got a really dirty sense of humour so it was good fun, we had a really good laugh, and then things happened.”

And it appears that Prince William is a very caring partner towards Kate. Swoon.

She previously told Hello! how much of a gentleman William is, and said: "You know, over the years William has looked after me, he's treated me very well — as the loving boyfriend he is, he is very supportive of me through the good times and also through the bad times.”

In April 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton tied the knot at Westminster Abbey in a ceremony watched around the world by millions of fans.

Kate wore a spectacular Alexander McQueen dress and the smitten prince could be seen telling Kate: “You look beautiful” before the service began.

They may have an unconventional life, but when it comes to their relationship, it all boils down to having fun.

Prince William added: “Obviously we both have a very fun time together, both have a very good sense of humour about things, we're down to earth, we take the mickey out of each other a lot, and she's got plenty of habits that make me laugh that I tease her about."

Kate especially caught William’s eye in 20002 when she modelled that infamous outfit at a fashion show - a see-through dress showing off her underwear.

According to author Robert Lacey, the Prince turned to pal Fergus Boyd and said 'Wow, 'Kate's hot!'.

There were reports the pair were seen kissing at the aftershow party, but Robert revealed the pair had a flirty run-in before the fashion show.

Prince William and Kate Middleton's affectionate nicknames for each other

ROYAL editor Ingrid Seward told The Sun’s Royal Show that the Prince and Princess of Wales have some rather informal pet names for one another.

Speaking to The Sun’s Royal Correspondent Matt Wilkinson, she said: “Prince William was Big Willie, I think.

“Kate was Babykins, But people change their nicknames every time.”

Ingrid added that King Charles often refers to Queen Camilla as “darling” or “beloved."

Robert noted that “love struck” between the pair, and Kate was asked to join a flat-share with Prince William in their second year, with two other friends.

The house reportedly cost £100 a week each.

The couple had an on-off relationship over the next few years, with Kate turning down an invitation to the royal’s traditional Christmas lunch at Sandringham in 2006 until she had a ring.

The prince eventually got down on one knee in Kenya in 2010, and the couple wed the year after, welcoming Prince George, 11, in 2012, Princess Charlotte, nine in 2015, and Prince Louis, six, in 2018.
