Real Madrid’s incredible new Bernabeu stadium to feature ‘secret underground cave’ to store removable pitch

REAL MADRID'S incredible new Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is set to feature a "secret underground cave" to store a removable pitch. 

The stunning ground is expected to become the world's finest stadium after its £500m glossy makeover which began in March.

Plans for the ambitious new stadium had been bubbling away for over five years before the club was finally granted its dream revamp by the city's council. 

The bold makeover is set to include a new metallic shell,  a hotel on site, a 360-degree screen, retractable roof and refurbished private boxes.

According to the club has already begun installing a secret underground cave to store a removable pitch so the impressive venue can be used for concerts.

A complex system of plates and rails will allow the grass to be moved at any time.

There will be a "greenhouse" cave in the West stand 15m underground, where the pitch will be stored when it isn't being used.

When the grass is nestled in its secret grotto, it will be watered meticulously and kept at the perfect temperature to ensure it stays match fit.

The Bernabeu's makeover could take as long as five years to complete but the club have officially stated the date of completion to be October 2022.

Changes to the ground will reduce the capacity from 80,243 to 80,242.

The Spanish giants may be forced to temporarily ditch their home of 73 years so the redevelopment can plough ahead.

Los Blancos are considering a move to the 6,000-capacity Alfredo Di Stefano if the season is continued behind closed doors.

Hopes of an early resumption of LaLiga appear to have been ended as the head of the country’s sports body said it is “impossible” to give a return date.

The league's president Javier Tebas, recently stated how Spanish teams could be forced to play every 48 hours, with Champions League games to be played on Saturdays.
