BURY have been deducted three points but it won’t cost them financially after the League One side fielded an ineligible player in their final game of last season.

The English Football League penalised the Shakers after teenager Callum Styles came on as second half substitute in the 3-2 victory over Southend United.

The points have been taken off their tally from last season and sees them drop from 14th to 16th.

But the good news for Bury is that teams who finish outside of the play-offs all receive the same share of the £680,000 prize fund.

A statement from the EFL read: “A Disciplinary Commission has ruled that Bury are to be deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player, Callum Styles, in the Sky Bet League One fixture against Southend United on Sunday, May 8.

“The club has accepted that Styles was not registered in accordance with League regulations and the points deduction will be applied retrospectively to Bury’s 2015/16 season total.

"The final divisional table for League One will be adjusted with Bury dropping from 14th to 16th place.”
