that Sterling and team-mate Kyle Walker were both sent monkey emojis on social media.

Sterling, 26, and Walker, 31, both started for Man City in the Champions League final on Saturday night.

But both were subjected to racist messages online after Chelsea's win thanks to Kai Havertz's goal.

A Facebook company spokesperson said: ""The racist abuse sent to these players last night is abhorrent and we don’t want it on Instagram.

"We swiftly removed a number of comments and accounts for breaking our rules and we’re continuing to review and take action against those that violate our policies.

"We have built safety features, including Comment Filters and Message Controls, which can meaningfully decrease the abuse people experience.

"No single thing will fix this challenge overnight but we’re committed to doing what we can to keep our community safe from abuse.”

It comes just days after England team-mate Marcus Rashford suffered racist abuse after a European loss.

Rashford received 'at least 70' racist messages online after Manchester United's defeat by Villarreal in the Europa League final.

Rashford outed a racist teacher who sent a “mountain of monkey emojis” to his Instagram account.

The ace, abused in a private message, replied on the troll’s public profile: “Is this something you are teaching children?”

Rashford, 23, tweeted that he was racially targeted after the loss, including by a school teacher.

He posted: "At least 70 racial slurs on my social accounts counted so far.

"For those working to make me feel any worse than I already do, good luck trying.

"I’m more outraged that one of the abusers that left a mountain of monkey emojis in my DM is a maths teacher with an open profile.

"He teaches children!! And knows that he can freely racially abuse without consequence…"
