FOOTBALL fans were horrified to see Danish attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen collapse on the pitch in a Euro 2021 game against Finland.

Onlookers sobbed as the player was resuscitated live on air.

Why did Christian Eriksen collapse?

Christian Eriksen collapsed in the 43rd minute during Denmark's Euro 2021 opener with Finland.

The shocking scenes happened towards the end of the first half of the teams' opening match.

It later emerged that Eriksen had collapsed after suffering a cardiac arrest.

His distraught teammates formed a circle around the Inter Milan ace, with some in tears.

UEFA announced the Group B match was suspended due to a "medical emergency."

The midfielder's wife, Sabrina Kvist Jensen, was seen in tears and being consoled by Danish players after she rushed down to the pitch.

But it later went ahead after Uefa gave the teams the option of continuing the same evening or playing on on Sunday at 12pm. Finland ran out 1-0 winners.

What is Christian Eriksen's condition?

A UEFA Euro 2020 spokesman has tweeted that Eriksen was rushed to hospital and "has been stabilised".

The spokesman tweeted: "Following the medical emergency involving Denmark's player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET.

"The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilized."

Eriksen is now awake and talking and will wear his Denmark kit in hospital when they face Belgium.

Tottenham football correspondent Alasdair Gold said: "Full credit to the medical staff, players and officials who all acted so quickly around Christian Eriksen amid the shock."

Will Christian Eriksen play football again?

There has been no update over the future of Christian Eriksen's playing career.

What is known is that the Denmark star is being fitted with an implantable defibrillator for his heart.

Bolton's Fabrice Muamba was forced to retire after suffering a cardiac arrest against Tottenham in 2012.

However, former Man Utd star Daley Blind was fitted with an ICD and was able to continue playing.
