RIO's Olympics opening ceremony features a scene in which Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen is mugged, say reports.

Despite pleas from organisers to keep details of the top-secret show under wraps, there were leaks in newspapers across the country following a dress rehearsal over the weekend.

According to one paper, the 36-year-old is "assaulted" as part of the ceremony at the Maracana football stadium, before making up with her attacker in a "message of peace".

Another report was less impressed by the spectacle, branding it "a strange homage to Rio."

Cast members in the opening ceremony fumed that the scene ruins the show.

One unnamed participant said: "We have complained.

"I hope it does not go ahead."

However, director Fernando Mierelles, one of the show's masterminds took to social media to deny the papers' claims.

He tweeted: ""Folha de SP says Gisele is assaulted during the opening ceremony at the Olympics. Where does Folha get this dumb idea from? They messed up badly,"

While the performance may have a happy ending, there are concerns that real-life muggings could be a major problem at next week's Olympic Games, which will be South America's first.

Street robberies in Rio de Janiero rocketed in the first half of this year, up 34 per cent to almost 60,000 incidents, according to official statistics.

In June, Australian Olympic Authorities called for increased security after one of their gold-medal winning paralympians had her bike stolen when she was robbed at gun-point at a bus stop near her hotel.

Thousands of troops are now patrolling the streets, as well heavily reinforced police.
