Kane is desperate for a move to the Etihad after telling Spurs he wants to leave to win trophies.

But chairman Daniel Levy is thought to value the England captain around £160m, with City unlikely to reach that target.

They have of course just shelled out £100m to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa.

Speaking about the possibility of bringing in another £100m+ man, Guardiola said: "Harry Kane is an exceptionally talented striker and of course, we're very interested.

"But if Tottenham don't want to sell… Of course, we'll try."

But then, hinting that Spurs are playing hardball, the former Barcelona gaffer added: "If Tottenham don’t want to negotiate, it is finished.

"If they want to negotiate, many clubs would like to sign him. We are not an exception. We are very interested in him."

Spurs are unhappy with Kane after he disobeyed orders to return from his holiday.

Kane had already left Spurs chairman Daniel Levy fuming after he failed to report at Hotspur Way for testing on Monday in a bid to force through his £160million move to Manchester City.

But Tottenham are also dismayed at Kane's decision to extend his holiday after the striker was told, like all his team-mates, that overseas trips needed to take into account Government quarantine rules.

Rather than return in time to be clear to report back for work at the start of this week, Kane opted to delay coming back to the UK and is still in Florida.

The 28-year-old will only be free to go to work once he has flown home, passed a five-day quarantine period and taken a Covid-19 release test.

As a result of Kane's decision, Spurs are hardening their resolve not to be bullied into selling.

And judging by Guardiola's latest comments, the transfer tug-of-war is set to continue for a while longer.

City may also be on red alert for Lionel Messi after it was confirmed he has LEFT Barcelona.

The Spanish giants admitted they could not afford to offer the six-time Ballon d'Or winner a new contract.
