McKayla Maroney hands Olympic ‘unimpressed face’ meme title to Michael Phelps as gymnast focuses on music career
THERE were plenty of memorable moments at the London 2012 Olympic Games, but it was one athlete's reaction that caught the world's attention.
When US gymnast McKayla Maroney had a fall during her solo effort, she ended her 33-vault hitting streak and dashed her hopes of winning.
It's safe to say that McKayla was less than impressed that she failed to get her hands on victory, as she was photographed with her arms crossed and lips tightly pursed to one side.
Thanks to the McKayla is not impressed Tumblr blog, the image went viral – and was Photoshopped into various ‘impressive’ situations.
Luckily, McKayla took the mockery in her stride and even roped in President Obama to recreate her signature pose when she visited the White House in 2012.
This year McKayla is not competing in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, as she retired from gymnastics retirement following a knee injury.
Now, she has her sights set on a new singing career, as she's preparing to release her own single, Ghost, on September 8.
As McKayla isn't in Rio to recreate her notorious unimpressed face, it seems that she has passed her scowl onto another US athlete, swimmer Michael Phelps.
Before Phelps was due to compete in a semi-final race in the 200m butterfly, Phelps was caught by cameras eyeballing South African rival Chad Le Clos.
The competitor began shadow boxing in front of Phelp's face to intimidate him, managing to rile the US swimmer up enough to provoke a hilarious reaction.
Michael, who is the most decorated Olympian of all time, was not impressed, and social media erupted with hilarious memes mocking the athlete.
As the cheeky Photoshoppers went to work on the original Phelps snap, here are the best efforts to surface on social media...
1. The Force was strong
2. Rick Eye-roll
3. Turning up the heat
4. JK Lol-ling
5. Rappers delight?
Thankfully, Michael will probably be able to laugh at the fact he's now holding the 'unimpressed face' crown, as he managed to win two gold medals.
The incredible feat helped Phelps to achieve a record for securing a 19th Olympic gold medal.
