The Reds rejected a £25million bid from Crystal Palace last month and are determined to hold out for close to the £32.5m they paid Aston Villa a year ago.

And Klopp insisted he will not give the striker away as a ‘present’ to a Premier League rival.

Benteke, 25, has accepted his brief Liverpool career is over – with Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Danny Ings, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino preferred in attacking positions.

It is believed he was prepared to move to Selhurst Park, and could be tempted to join West Brom.

Hawthorns boss Tony Pulis saw a £15m move for Diafra Sakho fall through last week after the West Ham frontman failed a medical.

And the Baggies are desperate to land a striker before the end of the transfer window, with Saido Berahino still looking to force a move away from the club.

Palace also want Berahino, with an offer of £20m plus add-ons on the table, while Stoke have offered a £20m package for the 23-year-old.

But the former England Under-21 international will not be allowed to leave before Pulis finds a replacement.

West Brom were last week sold to a Chinese consortium headed by billionaire businessman Guochuan Lai.
